Anxiety???

Does anyone here have diagnosed anxiety disorders? Do you know any support groups? Have you recovered/improved and how? I have generalized anxiety, panic, and OCD. I’m doing cognitive therapy, but I know having someone understanding would help a great deal. Thanks for any advice.
By the way, I’m in my late twenties and have had anxiety since I can remember (around age 4 or 5).

Chosen Answer:

I do… I am battling it every day. It is so hard… and I feel like I can’t talk to anyone about it! I have a great doctor, so she helps some. I hear going to a conslr. can help, but i feel uncomfortable with that, just isn’t for me. There are lots of online support groups. I think ivillage can be a great resource. Even things like drinking herbal tea, getting sunshine, getting “pampered” at a spa could help. Yoga and meditation have helped me. Also, email me :) I’d love to chat!

My doctor gave me some valium for anxiety of going to the dentist?

Does valium work for anxiety and are there any side effects, my mother doesn’t want me to take them because she says there are some side effects.

Chosen Answer:

valium does work for anxiety, but it has more of a sedative effect than an anxiolytic effect, so it will more than likely make you tired and maybe a little loopy, depending on how tolerant you are to narcotics. there are side effects to any medication, definitely more dangerous ones with highly addictive narcotics like xanax and oxycontin. Xanax is usually preferred for anxiety, its just so addictive they rarely prescribe it for a one time thing, so valium is probably better, and he/she is your doctor so im sure what they gave you they feel you could benefit from in a safe way as long as you dont abuse the medication.

How can i explain my anxiety to my fiance that I’m about to marry next weeK?

I keep obsessing over my tmj. I get tense, heart rate increases, dizziness. He does’nt understand anxiety and it’s pretty severe right now. Waiting for the Zoloft to kick back in. How do I explain this to him?

Chosen Answer:

Take him to your Dr / Therapist. He needs to start UNDERSTANDING and showing interest in your health if he is marrying you. Do not try to hide this from him. It’s a matter of honesty about who you are.

How does Valium feel compared to other benzodiazepines?

Xanax is like a fast euphoric rush,Klonopin is a nice slow euphoric slide, and Ativan is a dull euphoric buzz. How would you describe valium (diazepam)? Ive never tried it- I want to tho. But how does it feel compared to the other big 3?

Chosen Answer:

I certainly can’t endorse or recommend you abuse benzodiazepines but I will give you some information.

Valium (diazepam) is among the most widely used and abused benzodiazepines. Valium has a faster onset of action compared to Klonopin, Xanax, or Ativan and the peak plasma concentration of Valium occurs between 30-60 min on healthy adults. Valium lasts longer than most other benzodiazepines. The half-life of diazepam and its active metabolites (nordiazepam, oxazepam, and temazepam) can last for 120hrs. Due to its long duration and less significant ups and downs, Valium is extremely effective for alcohol, benzodiazepine, or barbiturate withdrawal.

Unlike Ativan, Klonopin, and Xanax Valium is not very potent.

10 mg diazepam = 0.5 mg Xanax = 0.5 mg Klonopin = 1 mg Ativan.

Officially the maximum dose of Valium is 40 mg/day although in some situations larger doses are given.

It is impossible for anyone to know what you may experience if you take Valium or any other drug. Some people fall asleep, some act drunk, some feel nothing, and so on. I have taken Valium and it helped my anxiety, made me a bit sleepy at first, and that is it- no buzz or euphoria. It sounds like you “enjoyed” your prior experiences with benzodiazepines so you will likely have a similar effect. If you have used benzodiazepines a lot you may not feel much from Valium except at an extremely high dose due to its low potency. Valium also tends to cause more tiredness. For the most part the difference in effects is due to the dose, the duration of action, and onset of action.

I certainly won’t give you the “drugs are bad” lecture but make sure you know what you are dealing with. If you chose to use any medication make sure you know the dose and any potential drug interactions with other substances you may take. Generally people don’t typically become addicted to benzodiazepines unless they abuse other drugs but the small percent of people who do become truly addicted to benzodiazepines alone have a terrible time. And since high dose/long term use leads to physical dependency in up to 1/2 of users it can be particularly dangerous because withdrawal can be life threatening.

How does valium make you feel during a surgery?

I’m 15 and getting my 4 wisdom teeth removed tomorrow. They are still inside my gums. How will valium make me feel? Since im taking it before the surgery.

Chosen Answer:

Valium as a presurgical medication will help you relax and get rid of any anxiety (stress) about the procedure. You may feel some slight floating sensation or just mello. It won’t knock you out or make you feel intoxicated in therapeutic doses. The surgery will probably be done using a short acting general anesthetic that will put you completely out so you won’t feel anything.

What is the relationship between confidence and anxiety?

What is the relationship between confidence and anxiety? Does low confidence create an anxiety disorder, or does an anxiety disorder create low confidence? What do you think? What is your experience? Thanks.

Chosen Answer:

Well, basically confidence and anxiety are more or less the complete opposite of each other. I have an anxiety disorder, and when I’m anxious I find myself unable to be as confident as I should be. But when I’m not anxious my confidence is really high. So yes, you could say an anxiety disorder does create low confidence. I wouldn’t say that low confidence creates an anxiety disorder though.

How does exercise help ease anxiety? Does it only ease it for the moment?

I exercise everyday and suffer from anxiety. I take medicine to cope with anxiety and it usually works for me. I haven’t been to the gym since friday and saturday my anxiety came back (my period also came on saturday so the anxiety might have to do with my monthly coming on and it went off today). I always hear that exercising is good for anxiety. I noticed that too, but it only works for the moment then I’m back to experiencing anxiety like an hour later.

Chosen Answer:

Exercising releases endorphins, allowing you to feel better. Yes, it wares off, but if you consistently exercise on a daily basis, you’re happiness will improve.

How well does valium work for fear of flying?

I have to make a 10 hour flight in a couple of weeks. I haven’t flown in approx. 3 years and the last time I flew I pretty much freaked out. My doctor prescribed valium and I was wondering if anyone could let me know how well it works.

Chosen Answer:

I’ve never taken it myself but a relative of mine used to take it in times of anxiety. As I understand it Valium gives you a sense of calm and should also make you slightly drowsy, or relaxed and peaceful enough to drift off to sleep. In view of this it would work very well for someone who fears flying. However, if it makes you really drowsy and you end up sleeping all through the flight you could have a really bad case of jet-lag and still feel drowsy a day or two after the flight. However, if you are as fearful of flying as you say, you might think it is worth the risk.

Take care.
