What is an easy way to deal with social anxiety?

I have a lot of anxiety about going to school everyday because I have social anxiety disorder and it’s very hard to communicate with people and I get nervous that the teacher will call on me and I will get something wrong or say something too quiet. Stuff like that embarrasses me because I’m more shy. I don’t have a lot of friends because I’m not that outgoing and it depresses me. I also have no self confidence whatsoever. Any advice?

Here are a couple of ideas. Check out the sources for more good ideas.

Ponder on things that run inside your mind when you’re having an attack. Instead of thinking about losing control or, even worse, dying, start thinking about positive and happy thoughts, such as assuring or convincing yourself that you’ll soon get out of the situation.

Never think that the panic attack will make your heart stop and will make you stop breathing, or even make you go crazy and lose control. These are common emotional symptoms that are controllable. Again, don’t think about negative things when you’re having an attack. Instead, focus on positive and calming things. You can start by thinking that panic attacks can be treated and that you’ll never die from it.

How can a person suffering from anxiety make and go to a therapy appointment?

I feel like the anxiety over calling and going is so overwhelming. I want help but at the same time I can’t deal with the anxiety associated with going. I feel like I might be able to hide it at first but I don’t want to break down or drive there and then sit in the parking lot frozen by anxiety.

And mind over matter doesn’t help…as I’m sure those of you dealing with anxiety know. I’ve tried to feel different, I just can’t seem to.

Chosen Answer:

Call your local hospital outpatient clinic and state your issues and say you would like to see someone. This would be a lot easier than picking one out of the phone book, or maybe you already have one in mind. Your anxiety can be helped greatly by therapy and medication and you need to comfort yourself with these thoughts. When you get in there and start talking about whats bothering you, you will start to feel a little less anxiety. Is there some major problem in your life right now, like death of a loved one, or something else traumatic that happened to you? Your probably like me and have a genetic predisposition to having anxiety but there is most likely something in your life making it worse, think about what that is and write about, cry about it, think about and start dealing with it. Plus stay far away from any stimulants, like coffee, tea, soda with caffeine.

What is the best anxiety medication for teens?

My brother is 14 and has been diagnosed with anxiety disorder. He was prescribed Zoloft about a month ago and it has not made any changes in him at all except for increased appetite. His anxiety has gotten so bad he can’t even go to school or to places with a lot of people. Going back to the doctor tomorrow but would appreciate an opinion from someone who has had a similar experience. I also have anxiety and take Klonopin (benzos) which work great for me but don’t think they prescribe them to teens. Thanks

Chosen Answer:

Send your brother to a therapeutic boarding school. They specialize in treating troubled teens from all walks of life. The private boarding school is highly effective, so much so that many of the students come by word of mouth. They can help any troubled teen get back on the right track. Good luck.

How do people with Social Anxiety Disorder function in college?

Because i’m planning on going to a good college (Cleveland State University) when i grad in a couple years from high school. And i have Social Anxiety Disorder and i would like to know how people with this disorder generally function in college.

Chosen Answer:

Hi, I have social anxiety and am in first year college so i completely understand you. The first day i wasn’t nervous at all because everyone was new and alone there and i felt that since old high school people weren’t there, i wouldn’t have to worry because everyone seemed alone and awkward. Class is overall easy, because from my experience there isn’t a lot of pointing “ok, you. answer!” like in high school, basically whoever puts up your hand. I will admit it is hard to make friends, i have only made one friend in a year, but i feel that one is better than none :)
Just try to make conversation with whoever is beside you, just say “Hey, how do you think you did on the test? or Hey, can i borrow a pen?”(yes its hard, i couldn’t do it lol, maybe you can though?)
Just try to stay calm and relaxed, and take things slow, socially.
Good Luck!

I think im healthy!! what are my chances of a heart attack? like what can i do to get my anxiety to go away if thats what causin it even though it doesnt seem like it? please help :/
Thanks everyone :)

Chosen Answer:

Not too likely you would have a heart attack at 15.

DO see a doctor though, your symptoms “could” be something other than anxiety and they should check.

The symptoms you described are typical of anxiety though. The best treatment is always to find out what you are anxious about and talk to someone: a relative, friend, school counselor or therapist.

If it’s bad enough, they can prescribe medication for it but it’s best not to have to do that.

Once you recognize the anxiety is not going to harm you or interfere with your life it will usually go away on it’s own.

Keep up your sports. Exercise literally produces chemicals in your body that helps with anxiety.

Anxiety ??

How can I get rid of this anxiety??? I am trying to do work but I can’t focus. I have this horrible feeling that something bad is going to happen or is happening or that i need to do something. It is soo distracting. ANy help??

Chosen Answer:

I have this feeling all the time.. I try not to let it consume me.. So I just try to pay attention to what I’m doing at the moment. Sometimes it’s like you’re stuck in it.. You can’t get your mind of it.. But seriously try to focus on other tasks at hand.. I had seen a doctor but they made me more annoyed and medicines just made me more irritable.

Anxiety???

my b/f has anxiety, i try to deal with the days were he just doesnt feel like going anywhere or doing anything…the days he doesn’t “feel good” and is grumpy i try not to argue with him..but i really want to know what its like for people with it. Please describe how some of you feel, so maybe i can understand better what he is going through on these days???

Chosen Answer:

I know it must be hard for you as my husband has a hard time dealing with me sometimes. It’s one of those things that’s hard to understand even when you have the disorder yourself. I have had anxiety attacks and such since I was a very young girl. I’m going to try to explain this the best way I know how from personal experiences.

Basically, at least from my experience, my anxiety comes from thoughts and fears. I can be in a car and all the sudden I will have this overwelming fear that I am going to get in a car wreck, that a drunk driver could be out and hit me, that I could run over somebody if they run out in the street or something like that… something a normal person might not worry about or if they did, it would just be a passing thought. But for me, it stays on my mind and brings on this great fear that weighs on my mind.

I have irrational fears, like when I go in a gas station, I fear that somebody might come in and rob the store and shoot us all, or if I am out by myself, that somebody might kidnap and/or rape me. When I was little, I used to have to pack a suitcase every night and put it by the door in case the house burned down. I have to check the stove several times because I’m afraid that I’ve left it on. It causes my mind to go so fast around these thoughts I can’t think of anything else. My stomach hurts, my blood pressure rises, and I often can’t breath and start crying, especially when I have bad ones.

I have a fear of being around a lot of people as well, because I don’t like being around a lot of people when this occurs and also because I fear people judge me. This is actually really hard for me to write out, but I feel like people need to be educated to understand what really goes on in the mind of somebody who has anxiety.

I have to have constant reassurance… if my husband gets quiet or gives me a certain look I’ll wonder if he’s mad at me. I don’t go out with my friends much anymore cause I just don’t like being out of the house.

Anxiety also has many physically effects on you. Like I said, I get where I can’t breath, I cry, my blood pressure rises… but aside from that I stay tired all the time. I never really want to do anything because I’m tired and because I don’t want to be out with people.

I don’t really know if this helped you at all, because I don’t know how your b/f’s anxiety is like, but this is how I feel. I would suggest you talk to him and ask him how he feels. I’m sure he would be willing to share these feelings with you so that you can understand what life is like for him.

Valium??????????????

is it worth the money or not?

Chosen Answer:

Valium is a very inexpensive tranquilizer if bought legally I use to pay about 15 cents for 10 mg. It one at the least effective as far as long term effects, it wears off quickly , but is also acts quickly. It is use primarily to relieve temporary anxiety, like going in for short medical procedure. I has the shortest half life of all tranquilizers. xanax and Klonapin hit your body a little slower but lasts a lot longer. Those ar much better drugs for your system.
As far as worth the money, I can’t understand why that’s an issue ,unless they are being bought illegally. No its not worth 2 or 3 bucks a piece if they are being bought illegally. they are very easy to obtain m Mexico they are sold over the counter

How soon after taking Valium can I drink alcohol?

I’ve been prescribed 2mg of Valium for a fear of flying. My flight is at 5am and I’m going to take either 1 or 2 tabs of Valium. Could I perhaps drink that night? Or maybe the day after? Bearing in mind this’ll be my first and only (apart from the return flight) time taking it.

Thanks

Chosen Answer:

Call your doctor’s office and ask. That’s what you pay him for.
