What does Valium do and how does it make you feel?

I have to have oral surgery in mid April and they called in Valium for me to take an hour before the procedure. I heard it makes you really sleepy and will relax you. Has anyone taken it before that can tell me more about how it makes you feel?
Thanks!

Chosen Answer:

hanna valium is in a class of drugs called benzodiazapines, (check spelling oops) i was taught in pre med pharmachology it has very good muscle relaxation properties and takes away anxieties like from going to the dentist. some people have told me when i worked in the emergency room that it was a great feeling for them but i never liked it. but i am weird that a way. u will probably get a long fine with it and sleep like u never sleep before.

What is Valium and what effect does it have?

I have heard of medication called valium and vicodin and how people abuse them and become dependant on them, but have no idea what kind of effect they have. Is it a long time process or will you feel something the first time you take them? Anybody know?

How long do anxiety symptoms last before they get better and clear up for good?

I have been suffering from Anxiety and worry, and because of this i have chest pain/tightness and dizziness/headaches. How long do anxiety symptoms last before they get better?
Actually i saw the Doc yesterday and told me to get more exercise and to relax. He told me to come back if i feel i need more help, but for now he advised me to do that.

Chosen Answer:

In the short term, the physical symptoms will last no more than half an hour, as your body produces a hormone which blocks the adrenaline.

Long term, you can suffer with anxiety for years (unfortunately!!)

I first expereienced anxiety when my son was born, I had free floating anxiety everynight, with panic attacks too! It lasted for 14 months, by 18 months I was completely normal again and never panicked about anything.

I then had my second child, who is now 4 months old, and I am back to square one…. But I know it will go again.

Seriously, don’t be afraid to seek professional help for your anxiety – It’s so so common. Feel free to email me if you ever want to talk about it.

what is the difference between 2mg valium and 1 mg ativan?

I have a cat on 2mg valium to keep him from peeing elsewhere from the litter box. Can anyone tell me the difference between 2mg valium and 1mg ativan? Are they similar at all? Has ativan ever been prescribed for this ‘cat peeing’ problem?
BTW, no, I did not take the valium (rolling my eyes here…) I know what ativan is all about; just wondering exactly what my cat is getting. Valium was prescribed by the vet; I’ve had to cut it in 1/2 cuz 2mg was making the poor little guy wobble all over. Wondering if ativan would have been a better choice. Apparently not!
Thanx for your answers; no I would not give my cat prescription drugs. As I said, just wondering what the difference between the two is, as I know nothing about valium except that it’s seriously addictive.

Chosen Answer:

They are different drugs!!!!!!!!!! Do not give your cat a prescription medication without the vet giving the OK!!!!!

they are in the same family I think. Valium being Diazepam, and Ativan being Lorazepam. But there must be a difference. I am not sure if Ativan has ever been prescribed for a cat and a peeing problem.
You could ask the vet.

What is the relationship between confidence and anxiety?

What is the relationship between confidence and anxiety? Does low confidence create an anxiety disorder, or does an anxiety disorder create low confidence? What do you think? What is your experience? Thanks.

Chosen Answer:

Well, basically confidence and anxiety are more or less the complete opposite of each other. I have an anxiety disorder, and when I’m anxious I find myself unable to be as confident as I should be. But when I’m not anxious my confidence is really high. So yes, you could say an anxiety disorder does create low confidence. I wouldn’t say that low confidence creates an anxiety disorder though.

How to beat anxiety and depression without seeing a psychiatrist ?

I have been going through a lot my whole life and I finally have an appointment with a psychiatrist on Wednesday but it’s really making me nervous. I am starting to have doubts on whether or not I should go. Should I still go or should I try and beat this depression and anxiety on my own ? What are things I can do on a daily basis to make myself feel better ? Any advice ? I feel like I should go but I have anxiety just thinking about going .

Chosen Answer:

Take a deep breath and go to your appointment. Nothing ventured , nothing gained. Proper diet and exercise will help as well.

How well does valium work for fear of flying?

I have to make a 10 hour flight in a couple of weeks. I haven’t flown in approx. 3 years and the last time I flew I pretty much freaked out. My doctor prescribed valium and I was wondering if anyone could let me know how well it works.

Chosen Answer:

I’ve never taken it myself but a relative of mine used to take it in times of anxiety. As I understand it Valium gives you a sense of calm and should also make you slightly drowsy, or relaxed and peaceful enough to drift off to sleep. In view of this it would work very well for someone who fears flying. However, if it makes you really drowsy and you end up sleeping all through the flight you could have a really bad case of jet-lag and still feel drowsy a day or two after the flight. However, if you are as fearful of flying as you say, you might think it is worth the risk.

Take care.

What is the best anxiety medication that works the fastest?

I am about to go to my doctor and ask her to prescribe me some anxiety medication. I have been dealing with anxiety for so long that I can’t take it any more. I wanted to know which anxiety medication works the fastest. I don’t want to wait months for the medication to kick in.

Chosen Answer:

MEDITATION and not medication is the answer;

Combine good meditative practices with the medication that your doctor has prescribed. The response would be faster.

Also, continue with your meditative practice without interruption life-long, just as you would not forget to breathe!

What is the major difference between normal anxiety and abnormal anxiety?

A) Normal anxiety is caused by worrying about personal matters, while abnormal anxiety is caused by worrying about global problems.

B) Normal anxiety does not have any physical symptoms, while abnormal anxiety is coupled with heart palpitations, nausea, and sweating.

C) Normal anxiety is caused by worrying about everyday things, while abnormal anxiety can interfere with daily functioning.

D) Normal anxiety is caused by stress and fatigue, while abnormal anxiety is caused by physical problems.

Chosen Answer:

I would say C, since any disorder in the DSM-IV requires that it interferes with your daily functioning, thus making it a disorder that can be classified. For example, sadness is considered depression only when it starts affecting your daily functioning for a set period of time(i.e. 2 weeks)
