Will Valium decrease the effectiveness of Birth Control?

I was just wondering if there are any possible drug interactions with oral birth control medication and Valium. Would there be a possibility of decreasing the effectiveness of the birth control because of such an interaction?

Chosen Answer:

It should be fine. The things you have to worry about interacting with your birth control pills are antifungals, antibiotics, and antiseizure meds. Valium is okay.

I would, however, suggest you take them at different times of day if possible. Both of them can upset your stomach, and if you throw up your birth control pill, that *will* lower its effectiveness.

How could I treat my anxiety without medication?

I can’t afford medication, and I don’t want to alienate my boyfriend or the other people I love with my anxiety attacks. Any suggestions?

Chosen Answer:

I suggest EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) I had extreme anxiety and used it. Not only did it help me when I began to have a panic attack, but it also helped me resolve things and understand myself better so, over time, the numbers and severity of the anxiety attacks decreased significantly. Meditation is a good suggestion as well, though it didn’t work as much for me because my mind wanders easily. I have problems focusing. Definitely look into both. This is actually Better than medication because you’re not adding all the chemicals your body doesn’t need. Take it from someone who knows that the hard way.

How can I overcome social anxiety without medication?

I’m 16 years old and have social anxiety. I had it for 3 years and hate it. I have no friends at all and want to fit in and live a normal teen life. Can social anxiety be overcome without medication? How do become social anxiety? I want to have friends but I’m too scare and shy to talk to people. Let’s say there’s somebody i want to be friends with and sits next to me. How do I get their attention? Besides asking them for a pencil, what else can I say?

Chosen Answer:

Force yourself to overcome this.

When they are sitting next to you, smile and say hi, tell them your name. “Hi, I’m (insert name), how are you doin today?” If a girl, say hey I really like your earrings, shirt, were did ya get it? If your in class make small talk “man this class sucks or this is so boring”. When you talk look them in the eyes (even if you blush) just have a conversation. If you have to pretend they are a sibling or someone you feel comfortable with and just talk.

It will take practice but eventually you will overcome most of it.

What is the best anxiety medication for teens?

My brother is 14 and has been diagnosed with anxiety disorder. He was prescribed Zoloft about a month ago and it has not made any changes in him at all except for increased appetite. His anxiety has gotten so bad he can’t even go to school or to places with a lot of people. Going back to the doctor tomorrow but would appreciate an opinion from someone who has had a similar experience. I also have anxiety and take Klonopin (benzos) which work great for me but don’t think they prescribe them to teens. Thanks

Chosen Answer:

Send your brother to a therapeutic boarding school. They specialize in treating troubled teens from all walks of life. The private boarding school is highly effective, so much so that many of the students come by word of mouth. They can help any troubled teen get back on the right track. Good luck.

I have extremely bad case of social anxiety, besides medication and therapy are there other ways to overcome i?

I didn’t know what it was at first I thought it was just “shyness” and that I would grow out of it well I developed social anxiety. I consider it a extreme case because it causes skip classes (college) to avoid during presentation and other “social activities”. I was actually suppose to graduate already but I’m still in school because this issue. My major is social work irronically and I don’t want to change it because I really want to help people but it would be impossible to do with the level of anxiety I feel in social settings.

Chosen Answer:

you can overcome this……..i have………listen to your therapist……it takes work……..it is awful having it…….It still crops up occassionally when I am shopping in a mall or in a grocery store. Basically you have to expose yourself to what is uncomfortable. I started at first just imagining being in a social situation…..that even made me uncomfortable. Just the thought of it. Then you work your way slowly…….exposing yourself to uncomfortable situations. the funny thing is after a while because you have practiced it………it isn’t uncomfortable anymore. finish the degree and you’ll figure it out after you graduate. good luck :)

anxiety………. ?

ive been struggling with social anxiety for a few years. ive been on medication, therapy, outpatient program, yada yada. nothing works. i avoid anything that involves more than 2 additional people at all costs. is there hope out there? what are some exercises that i can do to help me relax when i am in those situations?

Chosen Answer:

I’ve struggled with social anxiety before so I know how uncertain you feel- one of the things that I’ve tried that helped me a little is doing biofeedback- I don’t know if your clinic offers one, but many community mental health centers offers it. Basically, you get hooked up to a monitor that lets you see your heart and breathing rate and you work with a therapist to figure out exercises to do during a stressful situation to make yourself relaxed.

I don’t know what else you’ve done, but you could try group therapy too even though that may sound frightening. Group therapy can be helpful for getting and giving feedback to other people who may have the same problems as you do. The members usually make a pact to respect the confidentiality of things shared in the group so there’s no one else who will know about your secrets except you and your group.

And finally, don’t let people’s opinions get a hold of you- validate yourself and try to be your own person.

Good luck!

My doctor gave me some valium for anxiety of going to the dentist?

Does valium work for anxiety and are there any side effects, my mother doesn’t want me to take them because she says there are some side effects.

Chosen Answer:

valium does work for anxiety, but it has more of a sedative effect than an anxiolytic effect, so it will more than likely make you tired and maybe a little loopy, depending on how tolerant you are to narcotics. there are side effects to any medication, definitely more dangerous ones with highly addictive narcotics like xanax and oxycontin. Xanax is usually preferred for anxiety, its just so addictive they rarely prescribe it for a one time thing, so valium is probably better, and he/she is your doctor so im sure what they gave you they feel you could benefit from in a safe way as long as you dont abuse the medication.

Are there any medications like valium that are available over the counter?

Is there any medication similar to VALIUM that is available over the counter????
I usually need it before I go on the plane, or experience something like Parasailing to calm myself down. Everyone mentions Kava Kava and St. John’s Wort….I think those are more anti-depressants? Correct?

Any information/medications you know o but f? Thank you.

Chosen Answer:

5HTP would be a good natural anti-depressant. But everyone telling you about Kava Kava is spot on the nose. It’s natural valium. I keep it at work with me for bad days (I’m a nurse in a juvenile detention facility), and it calms me right down. Pick up a bottle and try it before your next nerve wracking situation. By the way, parasailing? Isn’t that, like, voluntary? Why would you purposefully enter a situation you know will upset you? If you’re doing it for the adrenaline rush, then DON’T take Kava Kava. You’ll be too relaxed to enjoy the rush!

How long are you supposed to take anti anxiety medication and can it stop your abnormal anxiety for good?

I’d like to know generally how anti anxiety medications work, how long one is supposed to take them, and how a person or a doctor knows when is the right time to stop the medication.
If the anxiety is due to a chemical imbalance, does that mean the meds must be taken forever?

Chosen Answer:

Are they selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors? They build up to a maximum therapeutic level, and slowly become less and less effective as time goes on. It depends on the drug, but they are not a permanent solution. They help break the cycle of anxiety, but it is necessary to change the circumstances that provoked the anxiety to begin with. Otherwise it is likely to happen again. The doctor should have told you how long to continue with the course of treatment, or at least have advised you of the typical duration.
