What is an easy way to deal with social anxiety?

I have a lot of anxiety about going to school everyday because I have social anxiety disorder and it’s very hard to communicate with people and I get nervous that the teacher will call on me and I will get something wrong or say something too quiet. Stuff like that embarrasses me because I’m more shy. I don’t have a lot of friends because I’m not that outgoing and it depresses me. I also have no self confidence whatsoever. Any advice?

Here are a couple of ideas. Check out the sources for more good ideas.

Ponder on things that run inside your mind when you’re having an attack. Instead of thinking about losing control or, even worse, dying, start thinking about positive and happy thoughts, such as assuring or convincing yourself that you’ll soon get out of the situation.

Never think that the panic attack will make your heart stop and will make you stop breathing, or even make you go crazy and lose control. These are common emotional symptoms that are controllable. Again, don’t think about negative things when you’re having an attack. Instead, focus on positive and calming things. You can start by thinking that panic attacks can be treated and that you’ll never die from it.

How do people with Social Anxiety Disorder function in college?

Because i’m planning on going to a good college (Cleveland State University) when i grad in a couple years from high school. And i have Social Anxiety Disorder and i would like to know how people with this disorder generally function in college.

Chosen Answer:

Hi, I have social anxiety and am in first year college so i completely understand you. The first day i wasn’t nervous at all because everyone was new and alone there and i felt that since old high school people weren’t there, i wouldn’t have to worry because everyone seemed alone and awkward. Class is overall easy, because from my experience there isn’t a lot of pointing “ok, you. answer!” like in high school, basically whoever puts up your hand. I will admit it is hard to make friends, i have only made one friend in a year, but i feel that one is better than none :)
Just try to make conversation with whoever is beside you, just say “Hey, how do you think you did on the test? or Hey, can i borrow a pen?”(yes its hard, i couldn’t do it lol, maybe you can though?)
Just try to stay calm and relaxed, and take things slow, socially.
Good Luck!

can i bring prescribed birth control and valium on my emirates flight from US to johannesburg, via dubai?

in reading online, i am very nervous about bringing doctor-prescribed prescriptions for birth control (mini-pill) and also valium (for flying anxiety, to avoid panic attacks). I am also unable to go without birth control, and have a very hard time flying without valium.

both prescriptions have clearly labelled information from the pharmacy that indicates that it they are a prescription.

will i have any trouble with security in dubai?

Chosen Answer:

Birth control pills are ni issue here, but valium is banned and seen as a forbidden drug.
You just have to have an official doctor prescription and let it verify by the UAE embassy in your country. They also can advise you to take it with you or not. Don’t take it for granted. The punishment here carrying valium is severe!!

anxiety???

I have a problem with nervousness especially when visiting a doctor, my heart starts pounding very hard and my palms start sweating heavily and I usually have the urge of running out on my appointment. It gets worse when they monitor my blood pressure it usually reads dangerously high due to my nervous attacks. I have similar symptoms when I have to public speak or be interviewed for a job. Are these signs of anxiety? Does anybody have similar symptoms I have?

Chosen Answer:

you should see a counselor. they are available at church, through some jobs, schools, etc…this anxiety came from somewhere. when you sit down and talk with a counselor, they will help you get to the root of how this anxiety began and if you are willing to help yourself, the anxiety will be eliminated or totally diminished…it depends on how often you go and the amount of confidence you have in yourself. this can change, don’t fret. you have already made the first step by admitting that this is a problem for you. good luck!

Is it possible to take homeopathic remedies with Valium at the same time?

It is for performance anxiety – have tried Gelsemium before but wondering could I take it with 5mg Valium to make sure. Have huge presentation to give and super nervous.

Chosen Answer:

Homeopathic remedies basically don’t have any interactions with drugs, so as long as your doctor prescribed the Valium to you and you’ve used it before (just to make sure you know how your body responds), you should have no problem at all.

How to calm yourself during an anxiety attack?

I don’t think my anxiety is that bad.If I calm myself a little bit,I turn out fine.
When I have an anxiety attack,I get extremely nervous with a racing heart.
How do I calm myself?

Chosen Answer:

A therapist would call this “grounding techniques”
What is involved is to access one or more of your 5 basic senses – focusing on it – until the danger is passed. This is a way to re-direct your mind on purpose, and to avoid feeling the negative feelings.

Single focus example –
For a person who becomes easily upset, purpose to carry a smooth rock in your pocket. At a time of stress this person would hold and rub the rock, blocking out all other thoughts, concentrating on the shape and feel of the rock in their pocket.

Multi-focus example –
Recognizing negative or upsetting thoughts, purpose to access each of the 5 senses. Look in your immediate area for:
5 colors
4 sounds
3 different textures to touch
2 smells
1 change the taste in your mouth – gum, candy, etc mint works well here

Is it normal for valium to cause depression?

I often need to take valium for my nervous spasms in class, otherwise I cannot even keep eye contact with the instructor. Usually after I take it and when class ends, I get so depressed I can cry. I’m not usually like this, I feel like it is kind of serious sometimes…
Can valium induce this?

Chosen Answer:

Absolutely, Valium (diazepam) is a hypnotic sedative and central nervous system depressant of the benzodiazepine class of drugs, and it can also cause amnesia – not good for studying or class..

Not only can Valium cause depression, it makes existing depression worse.

Because Valium is so addictive to your system, when the dose begins to wear off, you immediately feel detox symptoms including depression. New studies show it takes more than 6 months valium-free to recover, and some peopole never fully return to normal after the benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome.

Valium is one of the most frequently prescribed medications in the world for the past 40 years.
