What is the best anxiety medication for teens?

My brother is 14 and has been diagnosed with anxiety disorder. He was prescribed Zoloft about a month ago and it has not made any changes in him at all except for increased appetite. His anxiety has gotten so bad he can’t even go to school or to places with a lot of people. Going back to the doctor tomorrow but would appreciate an opinion from someone who has had a similar experience. I also have anxiety and take Klonopin (benzos) which work great for me but don’t think they prescribe them to teens. Thanks

Chosen Answer:

Send your brother to a therapeutic boarding school. They specialize in treating troubled teens from all walks of life. The private boarding school is highly effective, so much so that many of the students come by word of mouth. They can help any troubled teen get back on the right track. Good luck.

Anxiety???

Does anyone here have diagnosed anxiety disorders? Do you know any support groups? Have you recovered/improved and how? I have generalized anxiety, panic, and OCD. I’m doing cognitive therapy, but I know having someone understanding would help a great deal. Thanks for any advice.
By the way, I’m in my late twenties and have had anxiety since I can remember (around age 4 or 5).

Chosen Answer:

I do… I am battling it every day. It is so hard… and I feel like I can’t talk to anyone about it! I have a great doctor, so she helps some. I hear going to a conslr. can help, but i feel uncomfortable with that, just isn’t for me. There are lots of online support groups. I think ivillage can be a great resource. Even things like drinking herbal tea, getting sunshine, getting “pampered” at a spa could help. Yoga and meditation have helped me. Also, email me :) I’d love to chat!

Anxiety???

I have really bad anxiety when I go into this one class…because I’m afraid of being embarrassed. I know it sounds really stupid but I think that if I accidentaly drop a book or something that I will turn really red. Part of this is that I don’t have any friends in that class (At ALL. Like not even someone I could ask a pencil from.) so if I do something stupid I can’t make fun of myself.

So I end up worring about being embarrassed and then I think I turn red and its a big cycle. Its really really bad and one time I even got nauseous!

Help! How do I calm down?
is there a way to “think” my way out of it…or something?
but the thing is i dont really care what they think yet i get really nervous anyway

Chosen Answer:

i had the same problem but i turned it all around as soon as i found some friends. if you ever see anybody from your class outside of class, talk to them. you can talk about the class and how hard/easy it is, or about the test you just took or will take. you can also take your time leaving the class once it is over and someone might even start talking to you.

What is the most grams of Valium someone here has taken and how was it?

I am asking to know how much Valium someone has taken straight and what were the effects? could you also please state your age if possible.
YES I KNOW ABOUT all the side effects etc. so please no posts from all you anti-valium activists who always post on the valium questions as much b.s. as you can think of wen you have no experience!

Chosen Answer:

I used to be an ER doctor before opening my own practice and I have seen people take over 100 of the 10 mg Valium and survive (with assistance of course), But I can only say that everyone of those patients took only Valium orally, not mixed with anything else. I have seen as few as 50 mg be lethal in combination with other medicines. Don’t play around with your life!
PS; I don’t think Valium is a safe drug for much of anything and I no longer even prescribe it as there are safer alternatives on the market!

How do anxiety disorders and personality disorders differ from an adjustment disorder?

In an anxiety disorder there can be an identifiable stressor – ex. social anxiety and social situations
Borderline personality – a stressor can be an abusive relationship. How do these things differ?

Chosen Answer:

a personality disorder is when normal personality traits become so exaggerated that they become a hindrance to normal functioning. ie: it’s good to be able to lean on people and ask their advise at times but it is dysfunctional to ALWAYS have someone make all of your decisions for you… even what you eat for breakfast…. that become Dependent personality disorder…. normal trait to an unhealthy extreme. An anxiety disorder has symptoms that are triggerer by specific events but are not a part of the person’s personality….. An adjustment disorder is when you have an abnormal reaction to something that should be easy to adjust to. like going to college is easy for some.. more difficult for others… but a few people just cannot deal with the adjustment and become severely deperssed, anxious, etc… it is limited to a single situation and goes away if removed from that situation.

How to act as though I have severe anxiety?

I need to act as though I have severe anxiety. I’m at college studying drama and performing arts and it’s crucial for this new role. I’m acting the part of a troubled middle age man who suffers with anxiety and Bipolar disorder. Any tips?

Chosen Answer:

I have a anxiety disorder so if I was you I would be really happy and jolly then sudden outburst with anger at someone or something when something happens, when you are anxious you feel like you are excited about something, remember a time like this then remember the feeling 100x more powerful, it’s horrible but if your acting. You have to shake a lot, be clumsy, talk shakily, move around a lot and try to always sit down. Hope this helps you!

How can I calm my anxiety problems at night time?

At night time I have severe anxiety and paranoia problems. I continually convince myself that I can hear noises downstairs and I scare myself into believing that someone is trying to/has broken into my home. As a result of this I am up and down the stairs double checking locks etc, and this goes on for hours. I’m hardly sleeping and its really taking its toll. Does anyone have any advice on how to overcome this problem?

Chosen Answer:

I have the same problem, PLUS Chronic Insomnia. Try to avoid eating any dairy products. The only time you should eat dairy products is in the morning. Dairy increases your mental and physical state. But I learned to overcome my anxiety and every once in a while I still have insomnia.

1.) Get into a comfortable position. (I sleep on my right side.)
2.) Clear your mind. This is important and you need to stay focused.
3.) relax your body. Head to toe. Let the stress of the day just flow out of you.
4.) (This is completely up to you.) But think about the time that you felt at peace. It will most likely calm your inner fears.

Then Voila. Hope this helps. :)

How do you determine a death by potassium when valium and alcohol were also involved?

How much potassium is needed to stop your heart? How much valium? How much alcohol?

Chosen Answer:

I would think the medical examiner would have the answers to these questions. They run all types of toxicology test which tell them how much of a substance was in the deceased’ blood. They also know the amounts of a substance it would take to stop a heart. If this is someone related to you, your family has the right to get this info from the M.E. office. Good luck. Some times you have to just come to the realization that you can’t help some people, and have to let them go, though I know it is much easier said then done.Best wishes.

Can overdosing on valium make your period late?

I took 30 Valium last week and I am 3 days late on my period. My period always comes on time. Like right when it’s supposed to. I had sex for the first time on July 4, but he didn’t (burst) if you know what I mean. So could overdosing on valium be the problem?

My last period was June 7, 2011
It was supposed to come the 5th of this month. SOMEONE please give me some insight.
