What’s the difference between the drug Valium & Xanax? Are they both tranquilizers? Whats the difference?

I suffer from Depression and Panic attacks, I have tryed Xanax and am wondering about the affects of Valium? I hear people who are stressed out say “I need a valium”

Chosen Answer:

They are in the same category of drug, which is the anti-anxyolitic (they are used to moderate anxiety). Valium is older and comes in doses of 2 mg., 5 mg. and 10 mg. Xanax is newer and comes in smaller doses. Xanax may be more addicting, but they both work well for treating panic attacks. The problem is, they don’t work indefinitely at the same dose (the body builds a tolerance for them), and you should avoid drinking alcohol while taking them, as this could result in a black out or in serious problems with judgment (especially around heavy machinery).

Can a lot of anxiety and stress cause a heart attack in a person with a healthy heart?

I have been to 2 cardiologists and a whole bunch of other doctors to check if I have a heart problem. They’ve done multiple tests and all conclude that I have a healthy heart. At times I feel a sense of my heart skipping a beat and off and on pain, I do suffer from some health anxiety and it stresses me out. I have a heart obsession I’m always afraid of something happening with my heart. I’m 21 yrs old and overweight but I have been eating healthy. I eat fish, lots of veggies and drink organic juices. So I just want to know if thinking bad things all the time can cause bad things to happen?

Chosen Answer:

I am the same exact way. I have been experiencing panic/anxiety attacks for a little more than a year. It is one of the scariest feelings in the world when you think something is wrong with your heart. I experience heart palpitations very often. I am constantly wondering if I am going to die, but the doctor keeps reassuring me that my heart is healthy, and I am absolutely fine.

To answer your question, yes, a great deal of stress, can cause a heart attack, but I don’t think you have anything to worry about at age 21. Obeisity, is also a factor in heart disease, but again, if your doctor has assured you that your heart is healthy, then my advice is to take his word. When you feel that your heart is skipping a beat, remember your conversations with your doctor. If you need immediate reassurance, visit the ER, most likely, they will give you something to calm you, and then send you home. I’ve been there and done that MANY times.

A pshycotheropist would probably give you the stregnth to over come your anxiety attacks on your own. I am just beginning to self cope myself. Sometimes, I wonder if I suffer from hypocondriocis.

Also, be sure to ask your health professional about any prescription drugs that can help you overcome your fears. I hate being prescribed meds, but I was taking .05 mg of xanax 3x per day, and you’d be suprised at how much it helped me. It was a little expensive though, so my doctor suggested klonopin. 1mg, 2 tx per day. It works great as well. I suggest you discuss your options with your doctor, and see if that helps.

Panic attacks are by far the most scary things I have ever experienced, and sometimes, they are hard to get through. However, It sounds to me like you are experiencing the same problem. Just keep eating healthy and I think you will be just fine. I hope you can find something to help you cope with this disorder. No one should have to live their life in fear.

If you ever need reassurance you can email me. jessicamay0120@yahoo.com. I have found that talking with others with the same problem is one thing that always made me feel more comfortable. Try not to think about it, that only makes things worse. Remember, many people have this disorder, and you will be ok, and hopefully someday be able to overcome these attacks all together! Good luck with everything and take care!

Is it possible to stop anxiety and panic attacks with a positive mindset?

Okay so I get frequent panic attacks/anxiety attacks and I find sometimes, that if they’re mild, I can talk myself out of it. Has anyone ever managed their anxiety and panic by self talk or reassurance? Does it really help?

Chosen Answer:

Self-talk and reassurance are my go-to fixes for managing an panic or anxiety disorder. I find if I also have a “safe person” to speak to this helps. My safe person knows a few key phrases for reassurance if I am so far gone that I am unable to help myself.

Another non-drug non-psychiatrist way to deal with panic and anxiety disorder is to build routine into your day. Sleep at the same time every night, wake up at the same time every day. Before bed have a night time routine (shut off the lights in the same order, brush your teeth/hair, wash your face in the same order). This prepares your mind for sleep and can ensure that you have a more restful sleep. Good sleeping habits go a long way to preventing anxiety attacks.

How long after taking valium should someone wait to drink alcohol?

How long should someone wait to drink? Long enough for the valium to wear off I’m sure, but how long is that?
Oh and I am talking about regular dosage, prescribed valium. Not recreational use

Chosen Answer:

If a person drinks alcohol enough to get hammered, then they could die from that. If they are on ‘therapeutic’ valium doses, then less alcohol would be needed to die. Valium stays in the body a long time, but there is variation in elimination rates between people.

Adult half life values are about 20 to 50 hours, and it takes 4 half-lives to get rid of more than 90% of it.

Diazepam and its chemical cousins tend to impair short term memory making work performance and grades go down, and increasing the auto accident rate of drivers.

How long do anxiety symptoms last before they get better and clear up for good?

I have been suffering from Anxiety and worry, and because of this i have chest pain/tightness and dizziness/headaches. How long do anxiety symptoms last before they get better?
Actually i saw the Doc yesterday and told me to get more exercise and to relax. He told me to come back if i feel i need more help, but for now he advised me to do that.

Chosen Answer:

In the short term, the physical symptoms will last no more than half an hour, as your body produces a hormone which blocks the adrenaline.

Long term, you can suffer with anxiety for years (unfortunately!!)

I first expereienced anxiety when my son was born, I had free floating anxiety everynight, with panic attacks too! It lasted for 14 months, by 18 months I was completely normal again and never panicked about anything.

I then had my second child, who is now 4 months old, and I am back to square one…. But I know it will go again.

Seriously, don’t be afraid to seek professional help for your anxiety – It’s so so common. Feel free to email me if you ever want to talk about it.

what is the difference between 2mg valium and 1 mg ativan?

I have a cat on 2mg valium to keep him from peeing elsewhere from the litter box. Can anyone tell me the difference between 2mg valium and 1mg ativan? Are they similar at all? Has ativan ever been prescribed for this ‘cat peeing’ problem?
BTW, no, I did not take the valium (rolling my eyes here…) I know what ativan is all about; just wondering exactly what my cat is getting. Valium was prescribed by the vet; I’ve had to cut it in 1/2 cuz 2mg was making the poor little guy wobble all over. Wondering if ativan would have been a better choice. Apparently not!
Thanx for your answers; no I would not give my cat prescription drugs. As I said, just wondering what the difference between the two is, as I know nothing about valium except that it’s seriously addictive.

Chosen Answer:

They are different drugs!!!!!!!!!! Do not give your cat a prescription medication without the vet giving the OK!!!!!

they are in the same family I think. Valium being Diazepam, and Ativan being Lorazepam. But there must be a difference. I am not sure if Ativan has ever been prescribed for a cat and a peeing problem.
You could ask the vet.

How does valium make you feel during a surgery?

I’m 15 and getting my 4 wisdom teeth removed tomorrow. They are still inside my gums. How will valium make me feel? Since im taking it before the surgery.

Chosen Answer:

Valium as a presurgical medication will help you relax and get rid of any anxiety (stress) about the procedure. You may feel some slight floating sensation or just mello. It won’t knock you out or make you feel intoxicated in therapeutic doses. The surgery will probably be done using a short acting general anesthetic that will put you completely out so you won’t feel anything.

How well does Valium work on anxiety at a dental visit?

I’m going to get some cavities filled in 2 weeks. Because of my SEVERE fear of the dentist and needles, they prescribed 20mg of Valium one hour before the appointment. I’ve never taken it before. How well does it work to ease anxiety? And does it really have an effect on your pain tolerance like I’ve read? Anyone have any experience with it being used in this capacity?

How exactly do anxiety mediactions work?

I was just prescribed an anti anxiety medication today for my social anxiety. Could anyone explain how it works exactly? Like how it affects my brain and my thinking and everything?

Chosen Answer:

They alter the neurotransmitters in your brain, creating a calming effect. There are a few mechanisms of action depending on the drug. I would google the drug name and go to an official website or read the package insert if you have it.

I am not numbed or dramatically transformed by my anti-anxiety medication- I am the real “me” with them and am an overworked, tortured soul without them. They help me live my life, be productive, and get the rest and happiness I need.
